When we arrived at La Carpio, we were shocked to see the true living conditions of the community. Gayle showed us the effort the community made to build itself up, and although it was clear that they needed help, it was also clear they have worked hard, and had come a long way!
After we saw the clinic, where a single doctor was in charge of the health of the entire community, we went to the workshop where our work began. Some of us built beds, while others delivered them, and another group worked with the school children. Everyone was very grateful; from the children playing at the school, to the teachers who cared for the children, to the families who would sleep in the beds that we made, to Gayle, the driving force behind the project.
This experience has made an impact on all of us. The villagers of La Carpio have benefited from our willingness to help just as viewing La Carpio has taught us the nature of poverty, reminding us to take action.
